So What is EFT?
EFT, or Emotional Freedom Techniques, is a gentle self-healing method that combines focused awareness with Tapping on specific acupressure points to calm the body and mind. It helps release emotional blocks, reduce stress and restore a natural sense of balance and peace.
And What is Emotional Freedom?
Emotional freedom is the ability to feel deeply without being ruled by your emotions.
It is when you can experience sadness without drowning in it, anger without acting destructively, joy without clinging to it and love without losing yourself. It is not about suppressing or ignoring emotions – it is about allowing them to move through you rather than getting stuck within you.
Think of it like this: emotional freedom is when your heart can breathe.
You stop fighting what you feel, stop needing others to fix it, and start trusting yourself to navigate your inner world with compassion and awareness.
It is a return to your natural emotional flow – where you respond, not react.
Where pain becomes information, not identity.
And where peace is not the absence of emotion, but the presence of acceptance.
Emotional Freedom in the Context of EFT
In the context of EFT, “emotional freedom” has a slightly more practical meaning, though it points to the same deeper peace.
EFT works on the idea that emotional distress is caused by a disruption in the body’s energy system – like static in your emotional circuitry. By gently Tapping on specific acupressure points while focusing on a thought, memory, or feeling, you help calm the nervous system, balance the body’s energy, and release the emotional charge attached to that issue.
So, in EFT, emotional freedom means being released from the emotional intensity or limitation that has been holding you back – fear, grief, guilt, anger, anxiety, shame, or old patterns. It is that moment when you can think about something that once triggered you… and feel calm, neutral, or even at peace.
In other words, it is freedom from being emotionally hijacked by past experiences. You still remember what happened – but it no longer controls your reactions or your sense of self.
When we talk about EFT creating emotional freedom, we’re really talking about how it helps the body, mind, and energy system work together again, instead of pulling in different directions.
Here is how it unfolds:
How it Works
It is often said that EFT doesn’t erase memories – it removes the pain from the memory.
And when that happens, the heart, mind, and energy field all start to breathe easier.
1. Awareness – Bringing the feeling to light
You start by naming the emotion or problem e.g. “this tightness in my chest when I think about money” or “this fear of being rejected.”
This is powerful because naming it gives it a shape; it’s no longer a vague cloud, it’s something you can work with.
2. Tapping – Calming the body’s alarm system
You then tap on specific acupressure points (on the same energy meridians used in acupuncture) while saying gentle statements about what you’re feeling.
This sends a calming signal through the nervous system – especially the amygdala, a part of your brain that controls the fight, flight, or freeze response.
Your body starts to realise: “I’m safe right now, even while thinking about this.”
3. Release – Shifting the emotional energy
As the body relaxes, the emotional charge attached to the memory or belief begins to dissolve.
You might yawn, sigh, feel warmth, or even tears – all signs of energy moving.
It is like unhooking yourself from an old emotional loop that kept replaying.
4. Reframe – Creating new emotional associations
Once the intensity lowers, you can introduce positive or empowering statements:
“I am open to feeling calm now.”
“I choose to believe I can handle this.”
This rewires your emotional response, helping your body and subconscious adopt a new, calmer pattern.
5. Integration – Experiencing true emotional freedom
Finally, when you think back on the issue, the emotional charge is gone or greatly reduced.
You remember it, but it no longer owns you.
That is emotional freedom – the shift from reaction to response, from tension to trust.
